PSHCE Overview

PSHCE (C – including Citizenship) is an integral part of the curriculum at Bensham Manor school. The PSHCE curriculum is designed to ensure pupils are given the tools and guidance to be able prepare for life once they leave school. As a school we make a conscious effort to ensure the whole school curriculum focuses on personal, social, development and wellbeing throughout the curriculum. We ensure PSHCE is part of the general ethos of the school and not only in PSHCE lessons. As part of the personal development offer we also offer life skills and childcare at KS4. The skills and guidance taught in PSHE and Citizenship supports all pupils’ development as individuals in the wider world. Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum contributing to the life of their school and communities. In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning as best as they can. Pupils begin to reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. The lessons are age appropriate, whilst keeping in mind the needs of our pupils. Pupils learn to understand and respect our community, humanity, diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning. The curriculum is designed to allow for misconceptions to be addressed and topics to be revisited so that pupils are able to solidify their knowledge and skills.

A huge part of the PSHCE offer is RSHE – Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) which is an educational entitlement for all children and young people. It is lifelong learning about physical, moral and emotional development and sex, sexuality and sexual health. It enhances the self-worth and confidence of each individual and encourages mutually respectful relationships and empathy for others. Lessons are age and need appropriate and the content covered is shown below in the curriculum map. As a school we believe RSHE learning is incredibly important for our pupils, particularly as our pupils are vulnerable and hence need as much knowledge, guidance and support as possible. The RSHE offer is comprehensive and goes above and beyond statutory requirements* (whilst keeping in mind the needs of our pupils). The RSHE offer has been created after consultation with parents and the PSHCE lead/ Head of Humanities has spent a lot of time with Zoe Barkham Manlow – the Improvement and Health and Wellbeing Officer for Croydon to ensure that the RHSE offer is comprehensive and meets all statutory requirements.
